Longtime Versace Creative Director Donatella
Versace shall receive the award for Fashion Icon of the Year at next
week's BFC Fashion Awards, scheduled for December 4th. The
Reggio Calabria-born took over the creative reigns of the famed Versace
fashion house, following the death of her brother Gianni Versace in the
year 1997.
The award category in which Versace shall be honored on Monday evening, is widely looked upon as the most coveted award within the British Fashion Council initiative. ''For 40 years my brother and I have done what we love and that is a legacy I am honored to continue and uphold,'' the award-winner says in a statement to press. This December marks exactly 20 years after Donatella's brother - Versace founder Gianni Versace - died from a bullet, in front of his Miami residence.
Prior to her role as Versace Creative Director, Donatella worked alongside her brother Gianni, mainly looking after the brand's image and communication strategies. The fashion industry credits her for being amongst the first to use the supermodel phenomenon in both an advertising- and runway show context.
"We have celebrated empowerment, joy and, of course, glamour. We have championed a community of people who share our values and together with them have created truly iconic images in the world of fashion. I am truly humbled by how Versace has been embraced across the decades, across the world and across the generations. Thank you to the industry for your support of us, thank you to my team for their loyalty and incredibly hard work, thank you to my family and friends who have supported me more than they can know and thank you to the genius that was my brother Gianni. His incredible spirit is in everything we do and everything we stand for," the Versace Creative director shares, who dedicated her namesake company's most recent Milan fashion week presentation to her deceased brother. source
